Bogura people demand completion of unfinished Shaheed Minar

BOGURA, Feb 22: Construction work of a Shaheed Minar has not yet been completed after three years of laying its foundation stone under Dupchanchia upazila in Bogura.

The locals with a view to paying their last respects to the language martyrs started the construction work of Shaheed Minar next to Chaumuhani bus stand by collecting money locally a year ago.

But after the construction of the pillars of the Shaheed Minar, the construction work was stopped due to fund constraints. This construction work has not been completed even in thre years. Rickshaw vans are being parked in front of this unfinished Shaheed Minar.

Thousands of people of Chamohony area of Gobindapur union are venting their anger as they cannot pay homage to the language martyrs.

Abandoned, the Shaheed Minar compound has been turned into a pile of rubbish due to throwing of filth unconsciously from the very early in the morning to late at night.

As a result, the Shaheed Minar under construction to pay homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the language movement of 1952 is losing its status.

It is learnt that the construction work of Shaheed Minar in the area adjacent to Chaumuhani bus stand of the district has started three years back.

According to local sources, the locals have been deprived of paying homage to the language martyrs for a long time as there is no Shaheed Minar in the area adjacent to the important Chaumuhani bus stand on the Bogura-Naogaon highway.

In addition, various garbages from the market area are left on the premises of the Shaheed Minar. As a result, the Shaheed Minar under construction has turned into a pile of garbage.

In this regard, upazila chairman AlhajFazlul Haque said the construction work of the Shaheed Minar is not a project of the local union. Locally, construction work on the Shaheed Minar was started about three years ago, he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Zakir Hossain said the local union council would take necessary steps to complete the construction of the Shaheed Minar soon.
