Bogura potato farmers happy with fair prices

BOGURA, Feb 23: Farmers of Bogura district are happy over the fair market prices of newly-harvested potato.

Some farmers of Kahaloo upazila said harvest of early-planted potato was going on in full swing.

They said cultivators were getting bumper production.

Farmer Nizam Sheikh of Kahaloo upazila said he cultivated early potato on 24 decimals of land spending Tk 8,000.

He completed harvest and got some 30 maunds of yield.

The cultivator said the output was higher than that of the previous year.

He said seeds of the vegetable were planted in November last. Both organic and chemical fertilisers were used in the field.

Each maund of Fata Pakri potato was selling at Tk 700 to Tk 750 and Tal Pakri at Tk 500 to Tk 600, Cardinal at Tk 600 to Tk 630, Diamond at Tk 650 to Tk 750 and indigenous varieties at Tk 610 to Tk 620 in the retail market.

Traders from different districts have started visiting farmers to purchase potato from them directly.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, some 34,000 hectares of land were brought under the farming of early-cultivated potato.

Some officials at DAE said, "We took all necessary measures to make potato cultivation programme a success this season."
