SYLHET, Apr 13: Farmers in many areas of Sylhet region especially in Sunamagnj have started harvesting Boro paddy.
Grassroots growers of Jogonnathpur, Tahirpur and Jamalganj upazilas of the district are generally harvesting early-cultivated Boro varieties, officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said, adding, main harvest will begin in a week or two.
Upazila Agriculture Officer of Jagannathpur Shawkat Osman Mazumder said growers may not get a good production as the early varieties had suffered cold injury for days.
The official said farmers of the early-planted BRRI-28 and BRRI-58 are the worst victims.
A farmer of Bhobanipur village said, "Most of the paddy plants on my 12 bigha land turned dry (locally called chita). It would be hard for repaying the loan I borrowed at the beginning of the farming season."
Another farmer Abdul Hai of Jogonnathpur also echoed the same as he cultivated BRRI-58 this season on five bighas of land.
Only five maunds of paddy can be achieved from a bigha of land, a good number of farmers said.
Jogonnathpur upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahfuzul Alam said the affected farmers would be provided incentives in the coming paddy season.
