GOPALGANJ, May 8: The farmers of the district have started harvesting of Boro paddy with the hope of achieving a bumper production this season.
Harvesting of the crop began from last two weeks and will continue till the month of Joistho.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 78,225 hectares of land in five upazilas of the district have been brought under Boro cultivation and the production target was fixed at 3,33,147 metric tonnes (MT) this season.
In Gopalganj Sadar Upazila a total of 19,470 hectares of land have been brought under Boro cultivation with production target of 86,852 metric tonnes (MT).
Ramesh Chandra Brahma, Crop Production Specialist (CPS) Deputy Director (DD), and acting in-charge, Gopalganj said, ''Favourable weather condition, adequate supply of necessary fertilisers and pesticides helped the farmers to grow the crop successfully this year.''
Latif Kazi (44) of village Khatra under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila of the district told the FE the production of Boro paddy this year is higher than last year.
Growers of this area are hopeful on a bumper yield.
Nilphamari
Our Correspondent in Nilphamari reports: Harvesting of Boro paddy cultivated in the riverbeds and Singimari bill has started in Nilphamari district.
Farmers cultivated Boro in dried up riverbeds of 13 small rivers in the district. The dried up small river are Deonai, Kharkhoria, Buri Teesta, Cumblai, Shalki, Jamuneswari and Charalkata.
Sources said farmers of these areas are expecting a huge production as silted riverbeds are generally fertile. While contacted Abu Alam, a farmer of Panchapukur UP of sadar upazila said he harvested Boro in approximately 100 decimal of land and he is expecting 100 maunds of paddy. Another farmer Solaiman Ali of Balapara UP of Dimla upazila said he cultivated boro in 20 decimal of land in dried up Buri Teesta riverbeds and he has already harvested 18 maunds of paddy.
Narsingdi
A BSS report from Narsingdi says: Harvesting of Boro paddy has begun in all six upazilas of the district though it will get full momentum from the second week of May.
Concerned officials and farmers are expecting a bumper production of the crop in the district this season due to a favourable climatic condition.
Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Narsingdi, Muksed Ali told BSS that about 3, 44, 570 tons of Boro paddy would be produced in the district.
He said so far 25 percent paddy has already been harvested.
He said the farmers have cultivated the crop on 54, 710 hectares against the target of 54, 100 hectares fixed by the DAE in the district.
The farmers are getting on an average yield of 6 to 6.4 tons of BRRI-28 variety and 7 to 7.50 tons of BRRI-29 variety of the crop from each hectare.
The local DAE provided all logistic support to farmers for the crop farming.
BADC also supplied quality seeds to the farmers at a fair price. Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Sonali Bank, Janata Bank, Agrani Bank and BRDB distributed short-term loan to the farmers for making the Boro cultivation a success, he said.
