Boro plantation in dried up riverbeds at last stage in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Feb 15: Plantation of Boro in the drying up riverbeds is going on fast and is almost at the last stage in Nilphamari district.

Sources said as many small rivers are turning into farmlands the farmers nearby are planting Boro there. They produce huge amount of Boro crop there as the riverbeds are silted and fertile. Farmers are in a hurry to do so because late cultivation would culminate in late harvesting and the cropland may go under water in early rain causing damage to the crop.

Sources added more than 15 such rivers are now virtually dead which flowed across six upazilas of the district. The rivers are Teesta, Buri Teesta, Qumlai, Deonai, Kalamdad, Buri Khora, Charal Kata, Khatamari, Dhaijan, Mora Dhaijan, Shikali, Kharkharia, Shalki, Jumuneswary and others. Except Teesta the rest of the rives have been filled up with silt hampering irrigation facilities and causing flood.
