SYLHET, Oct 12: Work on construction of an important bridge on the Patlai river under Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj has been going on at a snail's pace.

A good number of locals said it causes sufferings to the inhabitants of the neighbouring areas. Only 10 per cent work had so far been done during the last 10 months although it is to be completed wthin 30 months, sources informed.

If things continue this way, it will be almost impossible to complete the bridge works on time, apprehended a number of locals.

Work on the 450-metre-long bridge on the bordering Patlai river began 10 months ago with a targeted cost of Tk 430 million in place of a normal ferry to connect the inhabitants of a vast area to with the Sunamganj district town.

The locals were happy as their long-felt demand was being met. Often boat-capsize incidents claimed lives of people while a BGB man of a nearby camp also met his end years ago.

On the other hand about 50,000 labourers of the neighbouring Barchara, Charagaon and Bagli LC station areas are depended on the river crossing.

The bridge works began in December of 2018 but things are very slow as yet, alleged a number of locals, while demanding completion of the work on time.

An official at the contracting firm however, claimed the progress is about 15 per cent. The works had been delayed mainly for the rainy season. Besides, it is hard to continue the works on the haor area by transporting materials and others during the monsoon.

There would be visible progress in the dry season, he said adding, we are trying our best to complete the work within schedule.
