Brinjal farming holds out bright prospect in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Jan 14: The farmers of Raghunathpur union under Sadar upazila in the district are being highly benefited from cultivating brinjal this winter season.

A total of 564 hectares of land have been brought into brinjal cultivation in five upazilas of the district with a production target of 4,075 tonnes, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gopalganj.

Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director at Krishi Khamarbari in Gopalganj, told the FE that all kinds of vegetables, including brinjal, are produced on a larger scale here for suitable soil and favourable weather.

Nearly 11,000 farmers are engaged in the brinjal farming this year and they are highly benefited from farming the vegetable, he added.

Pradip Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer (SAAO), Raghunathpur union block-56 in Sadar upazila, told the FE that around four maunds of the brinjal are produced on one decimal of land. Its production cost is Tk 1,600-1,800 and market price is Tk 2,000-2,200.

Utpal Biswas, a farmer of Raghunathpur Charpara village, said he has cultivated brinjal on 10 decimals of land this winter.

"I've already sold brinjal for Tk 18,000. If weather remains favourable, I will earn about Tk 35,000-40,000 by selling the produce."

One kilogram of brinjal is being sold at Tk 50-55 in local market, he added.

Uttam Biswas, another brinjal farmer of same village, said he has cultivated 'livistic' brinjal variety on 15 decimals of land this winter season at a cost of Tk 24,000.

"If weather remains favourable, I will get about 60 maunds of brinjal from my field, which current market price is Tk 120,000," he added.
