GAZIPUR, Jan 1: Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said we are exporting rice to other countries now. We have now become a rice exporting country with the help of the scientists of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) as they have developed high yielding rice varieties.
The Minister thanked the scientists for their contribution to rice production that has increased by more than three times over the last four decades.
The minister was addressing in the inaugural session of the Annual Research Review Workshop held at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in Gazipur Wednesday, as the chief guest with Dr S M Nazmul Islam, secretary, Ministry of Agriculture in the chair. Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Dr Abul Kalam Azad, BRRI Director General Dr Jiban Krishna Biswas, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension A Z M Mamtazul Karim, BRRI Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir and BRRI Director (Research) Dr Md Ansar Ali also spoke on the occasion.
Experts and officials from different government and non-government organisations including BARC, DAE and IRRI along with universities and farmers' representatives attended the workshop.
At present BRRI varieties cover 80 percent of the total rice area that account for 91 percent of the total rice production of the country. BRRI varieties have played a vital role in making Bangladesh a self-relient country in rice production.
