The government will impose a ban on movement of sand-laden bulkheads and speedboats from June 13 to 23 to facilitate homebound passengers' journey during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

Additional Inspector General of Police and head of river police Mohammad Abdul Alim Mahmud disclosed it at a view-exchange meeting on traffic management and security of river route during the upcoming festival at Police Plaza in the capital.

"River police are committed to ensuring hassle-free movement of passengers and transportation of cattle," he said.

Mr Mahmud said that river police will also provide security at all river ports and river terminals during the Eid.

He added that there will be restriction on movement of hawkers on the pontoons.

Mr Mahmud said that launch operators would not take additional passengers on the vessels and small and faulty launches would not be allowed to operate during the festival.

He called upon the launch authorities to operate launches in line with the weather forecast and keep sufficient number of lifejackets as per the number of passengers.

Mr Mahmud said that all river vessels transporting cattle must carry banners mentioning the names of their designated haats.

He said the river police will ensure security so that cattle carrying vehicles and cattle traders do not face trouble and harassment.

He added that 108 cattle markets will be set up on the riverbanks.

Mr Mahmud also said that plainclothes police members will also remain deployed at the cattle haats to ensure security to the traders and customers.

Fake notes detection machines will also be kept at the cattle markets.

River police will take prompt action in response if anyone calls through the 01320169598 and 999 numbers.
