KHULNA, May 4 (BSS): Farmers are expecting bumper production of Boro paddy this season in Khulna and that the harvesting of the crop also started from last week, official sources said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, farmers have so far completed harvest of 60 percent of the crop till Yesterday (Saturday) in Khulna and the rest 40 percent will be finished by the second week of May, said an official.
The sources said the farmers successfully cultivated high-yielding variety of boro paddy on 50,100 hectares of land exceeding the target of 48,650 hectares for boro cultivation with a production target of 1.7 lakh metric tons of rice. The agronomists hoped that the yield would be over 2 lakh metric tons.
Deputy Directors of the DAE Kazi Anisuzzaman told BSS that the crop grew in favourable climatic condition and its harvest is continuing in full swing in five thanas of Khulna city and nine upazilas in the district now.
Of the total, some 1,450 hectares were cultivated in five thanas of the city, 5,650 hectares in Rupsha upazila, 3,527 in Batiaghata upazila, 4,000 in Dighalia upazila, 4,600 in Phultala upazila, 20,000 in Dumuria upazila, 6,209 in Terokhada upazila, 100 in Dakop upazila, 1,914 in Paikgachha upazila and 1,200 hectares in Koyra upazila in the district.
The farmers are now very busy in harvesting their staple crop as they are getting bumper production this year.
