Bumper jackfruit output likely in Tangail

TANGAIL, May 24: Growers and officials of the district are expecting a bumper jackfruit production this season as the fruit is growing well amid a favourable weather condition.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail sources said a total of 5,074 hectares of land in all the 12 upazilas of the district have been brought under the cultivation of jackfruit this year with the production target of 61,120 tonnes.
Farmer Haroon Miah of Kutubpur village under Shakhipur upazila said he is expecting a bumper yield of the fruit from his 1.5 bighas orchard.
Traders have started visiting the district as harvest will start within a few days.
Generally a jackfruit tree contains 40 to 70 fruits a season. Some varieties like 'Hajari' contain 200 to 300 fruits per season grower, sources added.
A jackfruit is selling Tk 15 to Tk 50 in the local market of the district.
Md Arifur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer in Tangail Sadar, said three upazilas - Mirzapur, Shakhipur and Modhupur - are the leading jackfruit producing area of the district.
A good number of people have attained financial solvency by growing the popular fruit, he added.
