Bumper jute production on way in Khulna

KHULNA, July 17 (BSS): The district has witnessed a luxuriant growth of jute in this season due to favourable weather, and so, a bumper production of the cash crop is firmly expected.
In two upazilas of the district, the production of jute is expected to exceed the target, according to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
A total of 1,820 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in five out of nine upazilas in the district. The target of jute production was fixed at 4,350 tonnes.
Of the total land, 1795 hectares were brought under tosha variety and 25 hectares under local variety of jute.
DAE sources said of the local land, 1250 hectares were brought under jute cultivation in Dumuria upazila, followed by 470 hectares in Paikgacha, 75 hectares in Terokhada, 15 hectares in Dighalia and 10 hectares in Batiaghata upazila.
Over 500 hectares of land in four upazilas and in Khulna city were not brought under jute cultivation this season as the land was not favourable for cultivation, sources said. Kazi Anisuzzaman, deputy direct of DAE told BSS today that bumper jute production has been attributed to adequate supply of seeds and fertilizers, favorable climate condition and absence of pest attack.
