Bumper maize production likely in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, Apr 7 (BSS): The farmers of char areas across the river Karatoa in Sadar upazila and other parts of the district expecting a bumper production of maize this year.
Maize cultivation in char areas and some other places of the district are on the rise as most of the land in this region is of sandy nature where other usual crops do not grow well.
Official sources said the farmers of the char areas produce maize by small investment and get high benefit by selling the crop.
"We can produce 15 to 20 mounds of maize cultivating on 33 decimal of land by spending of Taka 1500 to 2,000 and can sell the total yield at Taka 10,000 to Taka 12,000" said Abbas Uddin, a farmer of Debiduba village of Sadar upazila.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said 14,201 hectares of land have been brought under maize cultivation this year with the production target of 1,20,960 metric tonnes. The farmers of the district are also showing keen interest in low-cost maize cultivation as it requires less fertilizer and irrigation, deputy director of DAE Najrul Islam told BSS.
Digital fair begins
A BSS report says: A two-day digital fair began at Boda upazila parishad of the district Sunday.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamunur Rashid inaugurated the fair as the chief guest.
A discussion meeting was held where newly elected upazila vice-chairmen Asadulla Asad and Laily Begum spoke it as special guests.
Vice-Principal of Pathraj College Aminul Islam, Headmaster of Boda Pilot High School Rabiul Alam, UP chairman Abu Bakkar Siddik and upazila social welfare officer Farhad Hossain, addressed it, among others.
