Bumper output, fair price make Magura broccoli growers happy

MAGURA, Jan 25: Magura broccoli growers are happy with bumper production and fair price this season.
Farmers sources informed, Joypada Biswas of village Hazratala under Sreepur upazila of Magura is the pioneer of broccoli cultivation in the district. He collected 10gm broccoli seeds form India four years back and cultivated on his own land. As he achieved a bumper production, local farmers got interested in broccoli cultivation. Finally from 2019 broccoli is being cultivated in the district on commercial basis.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura sources informed, a total of 16 hectares land have been brought under broccoli cultivation in the district in 2020 as against 10 hectares in 2019. Now farmers in the district are enjoying bumper production of broccoli, the sources added.
Anil Dey a farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura sadar upazila said, "This season I brought my 15 decimal land under broccoli cultivation".
Another farmer Mrinal Ghosh of village Kasundi under Magura sadar upazila said, "in 2019 I brought 10 decimals land under broccoli cultivation . As I got handsome profit ,this season I brought 15 decimals of land under broccoli cultivation and I am earning a good profit".
Shibu Shikder a farmer of village Tengakhali under Magura sadar upazila said now broccoli is being sold in the local market at tk 40 per piece. "We are satisfied with this price. Moreover, demand for broccoli is now high in the market . We need not go to market for selling our broccoli. Traders are collecting broccoli from our field".
On contact, Shafiqur Rahman, executive director of Palli Prokriti (an agriculture based NGO) stated broccoli has a great demand in the market. Soil and weather of Magura are congenial for broccoli cultivation . But farmers are facing crisis of seeds as there is no domestic production. If seeds are produced locally, broccoli cultivation may be extended to a great extent in this district, he added. DAE Magura deputy director Shukanta Kumar Paramanik said farmers as well as consumers are showing interest to broccoli. Now we are thinking to provide farmers with seeds and training to boost broccoli cultivation, he further said. litan1968@gmail.com
