Bumper production of mustard expected in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Dec 27 (BSS): The cultivators of the district are expecting a bumper production of mustard in the current season due to favorable weather in the area.
Good yield of the winter crop and its fair price during the last several years, farmers of all seven upazilas of the district are cultivating mustard. Easy cultivation and harvesting process and lower production cost are also reasons behind the popularity of mustard cultivation in the district, DAE sources said.
Alauddin, one of the mustard cultivators of Nabagram village said, after harvesting the Aman, the cultivators of the district started cultivation of mustard in their lands.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 43,149 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in all seven upazilas of the district with a production target of 49,661 tonnes of mustard.
Of the total, 8,500 hectares in Sadar upazila, 3,000 in Saturia, 9,500 in Singair, 7,000 in Ghior, 5,500 hectares in Shibalaya 3,649 hectares in Harirampur and 6,000 hectares in Daulatpur upazila.
Most of the lands are covered with varieties of Tori-7, Bari- 14 and Bari-15. Few local varieties including Rai Sharisha have also been cultivated, DAE office sources said.
Abdul Wahab, another cultivator of Gilando village said he had cultivated mustard in six bighas of land of high yielding varieties invented by BARI between the gaps of Aman and Boro to earn extra profit.
