Bumper turmeric yield expected in Bogra

BOGRA, July 22: The farmers here are expecting a satisfactory production of turmeric following various government steps and favourable climatic conditions in Bogra district including 12 upazilas this season.
According to sources concerned, the cash crop is now growing well everywhere in the district including its vast Barind tract predicting a bumper productions.
The farmers of the district said, harvesting of turmeric will begin next month if the weather remains favourable.
Besides, various research and development organisations like BARI, BARC, BADC and NGOs have taken adequate steps in collaboration with other departments this season to achieve the fixed production targets, they added.
The agriculture department and NGOs have provided quality seeds, necessary inputs and trainings on the latest technologies to make the programme successful.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) source said, "We have set a target of bringing around 950 hectares of land turmeric cultivation in 12 upazilas of the districts during the current season but the farmers cultivated the crop on 1060 hectares of land."
The landless and marginal farmers have also brought vast tracts of the sandy char lands under turmeric cultivation, sources said.
Kamal Hossain, a farmer of Dehor village under Kahaloo upazila said, "I have taken 0.33 acres of land under turmeric cultivation this season spending Tk 3900 and I expect Tk 20,000 as profit from the cropland."
Deputy Director of DAE Chandi Das said, "We have taken steps to achieve self-reliant turmeric productions. So, the farmers are showing more interest to grow the spice in their land."
