Bumper yield delights snake gourd peasants

BOGURA, Jun 09: Snake gourd cultivators of all the 12 upazilas in the district happy over the bumper yield this season.

Sources said farmers used both chemical and organic fartilsers to boost the vegetable production. Besides, the local agri office provided quality seed among the farmers at a reasonable rate.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), the crops has grown well everywhere the district as the farmers had taken an effective initiative to make the programme a grand success.

While visiting different snake gourd fields in Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Nandigram, Dhunot, Sherpur, Gabtoly and Shibganj this correspondent found the farmers were busy harvesting the produce.

"I have brought over 13 decimals of land under snake gourd cultivation this season spending Tk 4000," said farmer Habibul Haque of Shibganj upazila.

He also said, "I am expecting to make a profit of over Tk 23,000."

Farmers can achieve more than 16 to 17 maunds of snake gourd from a bigha of land if the weather condition remains favourable, said sub-assistance agricultre officer of DAE Azizul Rahman.

Getting repeated good profit previous year, a good number of peasants of the area are growing the item on a vast tract of land, the official added.

Each maund of the vegetable is being sold at Tk 600 to Tk 800 in the retail market.

Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said, "We have taken an initiative to extend snake gourd cultivation in the coming years."
