Buri Teesta Irrigation Project suffers multiple problems

NILPHAMARI, Apr 18: Buri Teesta Irrigation Project, the pioneer irrigation project of the northern region, is beset with multiple problems hampering its proper functioning.
In its initial stage it was envisaged to irrigate 11,000 hectares of land but this year the project provides irrigation facility to only 1,000 hectares of land.
Sources said the project was undertaken by the then of WAPDA in 1960. At the time a total of 121 hectares of land was acquired in Chiravija Golna union and Kharija Golna union of Jaldhaka upazila.
In 1962, as many as 12 gates were built along with six regulators, 12 siphons and so on.
Besides, canals were also built in some unions including Dharmopal, Mirgonj, Shimulbari, Khatamari, Balagram and Koimari.
