Busy bazar sealed off in Kushtia as strict restrictions in two Jashore areas

KUSHTIA, June 10 (UNB): The local administration on Thursday sealed off a busy village bazar in Kushtia's Mirpur upazila to prevent Covid-19 transmission.

Mirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Linkon Biswas made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

"A resident of Old Azampur village went to Chapainawabganj for work some days ago. After returning from the district, he tested positive for Covid-19. He is now undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital," Linkon said.

Two family members of the patient also tested positive for Covid-19. "However, they are recuperating at home," the UNO said, adding that the man might have been infected with the Delta variant.

As the man went to Azampur Bazar after his return from Chapainawabganj, the local administration decided to seal it off for seven days.

Besides, the house of the infected person is in the vicinity, the UNO said.

According to the local health authorities, four Covid patients have died in Kushtia in the past 24 hours.

In Jashore, the authorities have imposed strict restrictions in Jashore and Noapara municipalities of the district to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission.

The decision to impose the restrictions with effect from Wednesday midnight was taken at a recent meeting of the District Coronavirus Prevention Committee in view of a surge in Covid cases in the two municipalities.

The district on Wednesday reported 143 new Covid cases in 24 hours, pushing up the infection rate to 49 percent. Two persons, including a Covid-19 patient, died during this period.

According to an expert team of the Health Services Division, Covid cases are on the rise in Jashore district, which shares its border with India.

As per its three-day report, the infection rate in the district was 29 percent on June 7, 42 percent on June 08, and 49 percent on June 09.

The district has so far recorded 7,701 Covid cases and 84 fatalities. Currently, 72 Covid patients are undergoing treatment at Jashore General Hospital.

Additional District Magistrate Kazi Mohammad Sayemuzzaman said, "The local administration is worried about the overall Covid-19 situation in the district and that's why it has decided to impose restrictions on public movement in the two municipalities."
