BWDB to construct rubber dam on Mohananda river

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 29 (BSS): Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) will construct a rubber dam on the Mohananda River, which will be dredged in Chapainawabganj, BWDB sources said.
A proposal has already been sent to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Coucil (ECNEC) for the approval of the project titled 'Mohananda River Dredging/Rubber Dam Construction,' the sources added.
Executive engineer of Chapainawabganj district office of WDB Md Nasir Uddin said earlier a project proposal for dredging the river from Khalghat in the town to Nasipur under Gobratala union in sadar upazila was sent for approval but it was sent back from Pre-ECNEC, asking WDB to revise and include the proposal of a rubber dam. Later, BWDB sent the revised proposal.
Over Taka 1.45 billion would be required for implementing the project.
Meanwhile, Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) has started studying the project and after completion of the study, the site for construction of the rubber dam will be selected, he added.
After the implementation of the project around 65 kilometer area in the upstream of the river will be brought under irrigation and pisciculture.  Underground layer of water will also get recharged.
As the river will be dredged in the downstream under the project, water from Padma River will fill up the river and so, there will be no crisis of water in the area, he added.
