Call to cultivate more pariza paddy

GAIBANDHA, Aug 7 (BSS): Speakers at a function urged the farmers to cultivate pariza paddy in large scale during the middle of Boro and Aman season to get additional paddy to earn economical benefit and achieve country's food security.
"The farmers can get four crops in a year if they farm short duration Aman paddy-Mustard/Potato-Mungdal-Pariza on a high and medium high land systematically avoiding highly cost Boro farming", they said.
They said this at a function of field day on pariza paddy cutting at Barmatat village under Laxmipur union of Sadar upazila in the district on Wednesday.
Agriculture and Environment unit of RDRS Bangladesh, a reputed NGO, organized the function under its core programme with the financial support of Church of Sweden in a bid to enhance the crops diversification in the region.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) addressed the function as the chief guest and upazila agriculture extension officer M Zakir Hossain was present as the special guest.
With programme manager of RDRS Bangladesh Porsia Rahman in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by sub assistant agriculture officer Abdus Sabur, technical officer of RDRS Bangladesh Saiful Islam, farmer Ripon Miah and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman.
Generally, the farmers of this region completed the harvest of boro paddy in April and started the farming of T-aman paddy on the same land at the end of July causing the land remained totally fallow and uncultivated for two months and a half", they said.
DD of DAE AH Bazlur Rashid in his speech briefed the farmers elaborately about the merits of the cultivation of local variety pariza paddy and its cultivation method during the middle period of two seasons- Boro and Aman using natural rain water on the land.
The paddy could be harvested in 90 days after sowing seeds by using Direct Seeded Rice method or in 75 days after transplanting 20-day old seedlings by August 15 before transplantation of T- Aman seedlings on the same land, he added.
