RANGPUR, Aug 27 (BSS): Speakers at a human chain programme here have asked all for launching vigorous social movement to bring an end to all sorts of repression and violence against women.
District unit of 'Karmojibi Nari (KN)' organised the programme at Press Club premises recently with the assistances of Manusher Janno Foundation to observe the Women Repression Prevention Day- 2015 and 20th anniversary of Yasmin Murder.
Presided over by district unit President of KN Masuda Rahman Anu, KN's female leader Chandona Rani, Advocacy Officer Rajib Ahmed, farm-labourers' leader Chan Moni and Member-secretary of 'Realisation of Farm-labourers' Rights Law Movement' Zabid Hossain Swapan addressed the programme.
Hundreds of women leaders and activists of KN, students, teachers, professionals, socio-cultural and human rights activists and journalists participated in the programme.
The speakers stressed on involving the civil society members, public representatives, politicians, community leaders, teachers, socio-cultural and professional activists to end repression and violence against women.
Narrating various types of repressions, they said women are being subjected to violence, torture and abuse everywhere including their families, workplaces, streets and transports due to lack of adequate social awareness. Besides, lack of specific laws on sexual assault has further aided the rise in violence against women.
Terming this social curse as the main barrier towards flourishing women empowerment, the speakers suggested for incorporation of the concept of gender equality in school curriculums to help students develop hatred against society's ills and evils.
They strongly condemned the incidents of eve-teasing, sexual harassment, repressions and violence against women and children, including rape, gang rape, and murder after rape, acid attacks and other forms of torture and abuse on the womenfolk.
