Campaigns gather pace in Chandpur as election drawing near

35 candidates in race for five parliamentary seats

CHANDPUR, Jan 25: As the much-hyped 13th national election is drawing nearer, electioneering in favour of candidates has geared up and hot discussions have become prevalent among the electors of all ages here and there about the vote.

In Chandpr district, a total of 35 candidates are running the race for five parliamentary seats in the upcoming election.

After allocation of the poll symbols, both the party-fielded candidates and the independent ones have started campaigns in full swing in the respective constituencies.

Actually, election campaigns are gaining momentum day after day all over the five constituencies in the district.

Workers and followers of the candidates are hanging banners with their election symbols and portraits in the roads and busy corners of the town and haats and bazars and also in front of the polling centres to attract attention of the voters urging them to cast votes.

It is observed, with smiles on their faces, the candidates along with their supporters and fans are also shaking hands with voters and wooing them in public places including markets and mosques and also distributing leaflets.

They are giving many assurances to the voters about solving local problems, if elected.

According to District Election Officer Ziaur Rahman Khalifa, there are a total of 22, 85, 005 voters in the five parliamentary constituencies of the district. About half of the voters ( 1,18,335) are female .

In Chandpur- 3 (Sadar- Haimchar upazilas) constituency, there are a total of seven candidates. There are a total of 5,22,247 voters in this seat.

Of them, 2,50,634 are female voters and two are transgender voters.

Conscious voters guess that there will be a tough competition between BNP candidate Sk Farid Ahmed Manik and Jamaat candidate Advocate Md Shahjahan Mia . Both are young in age. But they are still friendly in their behaviour and conducts.

Still no political clash has occurred anywhere in the district.

In Chandpur- 1 (Kachua) seat, there are six MP candidates. BNP's heavyweight candidate ANM Ehsanul Huque Milon is a prominent figure in this seat, according to voters. The total number of voters here is 3,52,580. Of them, 1,70,207 are female votes and three are transgender voters.

In Chandpur-2 seat ( Matlab Dakhshin + Matlab Uttar upazilas), there are a total of eight candidates including a female candidate Nasima Najnin Sarker from Bangladesh Labour Party contesting the coming polls.

In Matlab Dakhshin upazila, there are a total of 2,05,157 voters . Of them , 1,00,265 are female voters. There is one transgender voter.

In Matlab Uttar Upazila, the total number of voters is 2,89,349. Of them, female voters are 1,41,808 . There is one transgender voter.

In Chandpur- 4 (Faridganj) seat, the total number of voters is 3,95,150. Of them, female voters are 1,90,285 and transgender voter is one.

From this seat, a total of eight candidates, including two independent, are contesting the upcoming election.

In Chandpur- 5 seat (Haziganj- Shahrasti upazilas), a total of six candidates are contesting the election race.

The number of voters in Haziganj is 3,04,155 . Of them, the number of female voters is 1,47,474 and transgender voter is one.

On the other hand, in Shahrasti, the number of total voters is 2,16,367. Of them, female voters are 1,07,712 and transgender voters are two .

Talking to the FE, voters of different ages said there will be a tough competition between the BNP nominated candidates and Jamaat candidates in all the seats.

New, middle-aged and elderly voters and also many female ones are going to cast their votes in a free, fair and undisturbed atmosphere.

According to the District Election office sources, there are a total of 700 polling centres in the district. The total number of polling booths is 4,264.
