Cattle rearers in Tangail make good profit


TANGAIL, Oct 16: Commercial cattle rearing is gaining popularity across the district specially in the char areas.
Sources said high market demand and lucrative profit have inspired the cultivators to start the venture broadly.
Natural cattle fattening is considered as a lucrative business.
Many unemployed youth have shown their interest in commercial cattle farming for attaining self-reliance.
Traders' sources said locally-raised cattleheads are in high demand in the market of Eid-ul-Azha. Rears get fair prices.
Sources said when cattle prices come down in the local markets, rears purchase cattle and rear it for sale in the Eid-ul-Azha market.
District livestock office sources said cattle farming is expanding across in all the 12 upazilas of the district.
A good number of rearers said they do not use any harmful medicine to fatten cows. They flow only natural cattle fattening method.
Napier grass, local grass variety and boiled rice are the main item for fodder.
Moreover, farmers can take their cattle heads for grazing in the vast char.
Haroonur Rashid of Jugni village under Sadar upazila said he sold for oxen during the last Eid-ul-Azha season.
"I want to expand the farming for the next Eid season", he added.
District livestock officer S M Awal Haque said there are some 1,222 enlisted cow farms in all the 12 upazilas of the district.
Out of the list, many small cattle farms are being operated by the poor people, he added.
