NETRAKONA, Dec 05: A portion of the ceiling of Shirbir Government Primary School building under Durgapur upazila in the district collapsed on Saturday last.

At that time regular classes were going on.

A good number of teachers said it is risky to continue academic activities at the dilapidated building. A major accident may occur any time.

"We are forced to take classes at the building as the authority concerned has asked us so", the teachers said, adding, "There is no other building where we could shift our school."

Student Rokeya Akhtar of class three said, "We attend classes in fear. A portion of roof has collapsed recently when we are in the class."

Assistant Teacher Nazrul Islam said upazila assistant primary education officer Shishish Chandra Pal had given verbal instructions to close the school after visiting the dilapidated building.

Head teacher of the school Khatir Khalilur Rahman said construction work of the new building has started but work was going on at a snail's pace. "So we have to continue regular activity at the old building", he added.

Upazila Primary Education Officer Md Abu Taher Buiyan said, "I have been informed about the condition of the school. Action will be taken on this issue soon."
