Chalan Beel fishermen expect Tk 44m profit from dried fish

NATORE, Dec 15: Fishermen in Chalan Beel areas are expecting over Tk 44 million profit this season from dried fishes.

Farmers have started drying fishes from the beginning of December and it will continue till March, according to fisheries department.

Meanwhile, they have dried some 30 tonnes of Churi, Rupchanda, Khalisa and Bhada fishes.

Besides, they are expecting to make around 70 tonnes of dried fishes by the year-end.

Sources said these dried fishes are sent to different areas across the country for high demand.

Fisherman Amol Chandra Das of Shingra upazila said around 10 types of fishes including Churi, Rupchanda, Khalisa, Bhada, Ditanas, Laitya and different kinds of shrimp are dried in different areas, he added.

In a recent visit to the area, this correspondent found Chalan Beel area are now buzzing with activities as a large number of fishermen are engaged in drying fishes after netting them from the beel.

Thousands of fishermen from different areas of the region, including Shingra and Chatmohor set up makeshift houses for drying and processing fishes.

Fishermen and fish depot owners go there for drying fish for preservation and sale.

"We are careful about providing adequate security for the fishermen engaged in processing and drying fish in the beel area", said district fisheries officer Alok Kumar Shaha.
