Chapai Kopai chilli gaining popularity in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Nov 02: Cultivation of Chapai Kopai chilli, an Indonesian variety, is gaining popularity in the district.
Most of the cultivators collected the chilli seeds from abroad as those are not available in the market yet, they added.
Dr. Abu Naeem, founder of Cumilla Gardeners Society, said he collected the chilli seeds from a friend in Dhaka. Later, members of his organisation showed interest in growing the chilli after he had shared the news on Facebook.
He said many growers have collected seeds from him. Average length is chilli is 8 to 10 inches.
Md Alauddin Azad, a gardener in Chauddagram, said marginal farmers will be benefited if they cultivate the chilli variety on commercial basis. "I hope the DAE will take the matter seriously."
Surjit Chandra Dutt, deputy director, Cumilla DAE, said there are many local and foreign chilli varieties. "We will consider the yield of the chilli. If it is satisfactory, we will suggest farmers to cultivate it on their fields."
