CHUADANGA, Feb 16: Farmers of Chuadanga district are happy over a bumper production of turmeric and its price in the local market due to favourable weather condition this season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said, a total of 620 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation in four upazilas with a production target of 2046 metric tonnes turmeric.
Of them 150 hectares of land was fixed in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, 250 hectares in Alamdanga, 120 hectares in Damurhuda and & 100 hectares in Jibannagar Upazila.
The farmers have started selling turmeric already in the local market at Tk 280 to Tk 300 per maund (raw turmeric) against Tk 250 to Tk 260 per maund in the previous year.
Tarik Hasan of village Belgachhi under Chuadanga Sadar Upazila said, "I have cultivated turmeric on two bighas of land spending only Tk 10,000 and already got Tk 18,000 by selling it in the local market. I am expecting to get Tk 8,000 more from the remaining yield."
The growers urged the government and NGO to provide short term loan and supply of high yielding seeds among the growers during the turmeric farming as they only planted local seeds on their land.
