Chuadanga farmers happy over pumpkin cultivation

CHUADANGA, Mar 24: Pumpkin cultivation has brought smiles on the faces of the farmers in four upazilas of Chuadanga district as it has proved profitable in the district.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said, a total of 435 hectares of land was brought under pumpkin cultivation in this season. Of them 120 hectares of land have been brought under pumpkin cultivation in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, 95 hectares in Alamdanga Upazila, 115 hectares in Damurhuda Upazila and 105 hectares in Jibannagar Upazila.     
Shamsher Ali of  Joyrampur  village under Damurhuda Upazila  said, 'I have earned Tk 60,000 by farming pumpkin on  three bighas  of land while earlier by cultivating paddy or jute on the same land I got only Tk 12,000 as profit.
Now one piece of pumpkin is being sold Tk 25 to Tk 30 in the local market against Tk 12 to Tk 15 in last year.
Deputy Director of DAE, Chuadanga Mr Haribula Sarker said, "We are encouraging farmers to cultivate pumpkins as it gives better yield and more profit with less investment. Pumpkin cultivation would be increased as the growers are getting handsome price to sell it in the local markets," he added.
Man's bullet-hit body recovered
A UNB report says: Police recovered bullet-hit body of an unidentified man from Boalmari village in Damurhuda upazila on Monday morning.
Sources said local farmers spotted the body of the man, aged around 30, in Sadarpur field at the village around 10:00am and informed police.
Later, law enforces recovered the body that bore some bullet marks and sent it to hospital morgue for an autopsy around 11:00am.
One Robjel Mandal of the area said he had heard a gunshot around 2:30am.
