Chuadanga lentil growers happy over bumper yield

CHUADANGA, Apr 21: A bumper production of lentil and fair price has brought smile on the faces of Chuadanga's farmers in this current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 1935 hectares of land was brought under lentil (pulse) cultivation in the district.
Of them 160 hectares in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, 450 hectares in Alamdanga Upazila, 125 hectares in Damurhuda Upazila and 1200 hectares in Jibannagar Upazila.
Due to favourable weather and adequate supply of agricultural input at the early stage, a bumper production of lentil has been achieved in the district.
The lentil growers are very happy as it is being sold in the local market at Tk 2800 to 2900 per maund while it sold at Tk 2500 to Tk 2600 in the previous year.
As this price farmers are expecting more profit than last year from the produce.
Sadequl Islam, a farmer of village Nawlamari under Alamdanga Upazila said, "I cultivated lentil in two bighas of land spending only Tk 10,000 this year. I expected 12 maunds of lentil but the production has exceeded my expectation."
The growers urged the government to monitor the local lentil markets during harvesting period so that they are more benefited by selling it in the local markets.
