Cleanliness keeps one safe from water-borne diseases: Experts

RANGPUR, May 18 (BSS): Experts at an orientation workshop today stressed on the need for becoming aware of maintaining cleanliness and hygienic behaviour to remain safe from various water-borne diseases for attaining better and sound health.

They put emphasis on comprehensive efforts of the government and non- government organisations in turning hygienic behaviour like washing of hands with soap before taking meals and after using latrines, into habits through increasing public awareness.

Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO), an NGO, organised the workshop on 'National Hygiene Promotion Strategy' at upazila parishad hall room in Debiganj upazila town of Panchagarh.

Donor organisation WaterAid Bangladesh, UKaid and other organisations extended assistance in arranging the workshop with Debiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Shafikul Islam in the chair.

The upazila level GO-NGO officials, representatives of the socio-cultural and volunteer organisations, civil society members, public representatives, community leaders, media workers and local elite participated.

Debiganj upazila Vice-chairman Parimal Dey Sarker and upazila female Vice-chairman Mrs. Lutfunnahar attended the workshop as guests of honour.

Adviser of ESDO Abu Azam Noor, Programme Officer of WaterAid Bangladesh Mohammad Wazeduddin, Deputy Director of Family Planning Department for Panchagarh Dr Mizanur Rahman, District Education Officer Jeebdhan Barman, Upazila Family Planning Officer Dr Ranjeet Kumar Barman and Focal Person of ESDO Pabir Gupta Bua spoke.

The workshop was informed that the National Hygiene Promotion Strategy- 2012 was prepared under the Water and Sanitation Promotion Plan 2011-2015 formulated by the Policy Support Unit of the Local Government Division.

Under the programme, various strategies have been adopted for promoting personal behaviour of the citizens on foods, water, hygiene, sanitation, cleanliness, hand washing and other related issues to remain safe from waterborne and similar diseases.
