Cold wave disrupts life of common people in Bogura

BOGURA, Jan 09: Cold wave, accompanied by mild wind, has disrupted normal life of thousands of common people in Bogura district for the last couple of weeks. It is expected to continue till last week of January.

The low and middle income people like farm workers, day labourers and rickshaw-pullers, who live hand to mouth, are the worst suffers with the unexpected situation prevailing from the early winter season.

According to Meteorological Department office, the lowest temperature was recorded between 6.7 degree Celsius and 8.2 degree Celsius in the region during the last one week. Another cold wave may hit next week, said the authority concerned.

The adverse weather hit many people along with peasants as the prospective tomato, potato and garlic farming are getting a setback, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Faridur Rahman.

Attendance of number of students in different schools and colleges has come down a bit due to the chilling cold in the area, sources said.

Farmer Mamunur Rashid under Nandigram upazila said he was unable to continue Boro paddy transplantation work in the cropland due to the severe cold. The day labourers dare not go to the field, he added.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Foyez Ahammad said the district administration has distributed approximately 40,000 blankets and quilts among the cold-hit people. They will distribute again more warm clothes after getting the next allotment, he added.
