Cold wave disrupts normal life in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Dec 11 (BSS): Normal life in the city and its adjacent areas has been affected due to cold weather coupled with chilly wind and dense fog for the last couple of days.
The sufferings of daily wage earners like day labourers, rickshaw pullers and farm labourers have also mounted especially in the morning and evening.
District Administration held a disaster management committee meeting yesterday afternoon with Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi, in the chair.
The meeting discussed and formulated a work plan on how to collect, store and distribute warm clothes among the distressed people to lessen their sufferings caused by the cold bite.
DC Mejbah Uddin urged the participating social workers, bankers and NGO leaders to donate winter clothes to the district relief section.
Meanwhile, Local Met Office recorded the lowest temperature on 11.1 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi today. Yesterday's minimum temperature was 10.4 degrees.
Mounting Cold spell with mild chilly wind and heavy fog has triggered cold-related diseases.
The number of patients suffering from pneumonia, asthma and respiratory complications increased in the upazila and district level hospitals, including Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said.
Assistant Professor Dr Belal Uddin of Pediatrics Department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital informed that all three Pediatrics wards of the hospital are occupied by patients attacked with cold related diseases. Many patients took shelter on the floor of the wards.
He said a huge number of children, attacked with viral fever, ARTI (Acute Respiratory Tract Infection), Bronchitis, Pneumonia and Diarrhoea, are being admitted to the hospital. He also said malnourished and premature babies are especially vulnerable to the cold related diseases.
