Commercial fish cultivation in cages gains popularity

PABNA, Sept 14: Commercial fish cultivation in cages in gaining popularity in Iswardi upazila of the district as a number of farmers have attained financial solvency from the initiative.
The Fisheries Department has provided all necessary support in this connection. It also arranges training course for the farmers on fish cultivation.
Meanwhile, mono sex Telapia fish farming has become popular in cages in the river as its farming is proved profitable, said farmer Amzad Hossain.
A good numbers of unemployed youths have attained self-reliance from the initiative.
During a recent visit this correspondent saw that a row of cages have been set up at the river adjacent to the Arambaria Government Primary School. Four corners are made of bamboo, steel pipe with a net.
The cage has been floated with a drum round the clock. When the water of the free water body rises, the cage goes up, and when the water is low, the cage goes down.
Chairman of Sara union Emdadul Huque Sardar said union council member Delwar Member is farming fish using the method.
A good number of fish farmers said varieties of fish can be cultivated in a cage. The method requires low cost.
District Fisheries officer Abdur Rauf said fish cultivation in cages is profitable. Farmers should expand the initiative to make more profit.
