The students of the anti-discrimination movement are now monitoring kitchen markets in different parts of the country to prevent the increase in commodity prices.

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, they have been playing a pioneer role in controlling traffic and carrying out cleaning activities in many places.

In Rajshahi, the students are calling upon traders not to sell commodities at excessive prices.

While visiting markets, this correspondent has found that the students are checking the prices of raw materials, fish, meat, onion, garlic, spices and other daily necessities.

Besides, they held meetings with leaders of the traders' associations to check the price spiral.

In the wake of the market monitoring by the students, commodity prices have started to fall. Common people have welcomed the initiative.

If the students regularly monitor the markets, the prices of the necessary commodities will come down, buyers say. Traders at Saheb Bazaar in the city said that the prices of all vegetables, including green chilli, started to decline.

Fazlur Rahman, who came to Shalbagan market in the city to buy commodities, said that when the country becomes unstable, commodity prices first increase on different pretexts.

"However, the commodity prices have not increased due to the students' drive, and kitchen markets have remained stable. This is a very good sign."

Since the fall of the Awami League-led government on August 5, the students have been working as volunteers in the city cleaning, tree planting, traffic control and painting on walls.

In Sylhet, the prices of vegetables and other essential products at the kitchen markets in Sylhet city showed downward trend following the market monitoring by the student since Friday morning.

They conducted drives at Madina market, Subidbazar, Rikabibazar and Ambarkhana markets. They are also playing a pioneer role in managing traffic, doing cleansing activities and planting trees in different areas of Sylhet city.

Market monitoring was added on the job list on Friday. A group of 50 students, who joined the market monitoring, urged shop owners to reduce the prices of the essential commodities to assuage public sufferings.

The prices of vegetables have deceased by Tk 5-10 per kg in the city, many said.
