Construction of embankment along Padma riverside demanded

RAJSHAHI, Apr 9: Speakers at a human chain held at the zero point of the city demanded to implement the project of 'Construction of Embankment along the riverside of Padma,' in Rajshahi, otherwise, they threatened to start a greater movement.
Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad arranged human chain where Fazley Hossain Badsha, Member of Parliament of Rajshahi Sadar was present as the chief guest.
During the human chain programme, Fazley Hossain Badsha, said, it was a long time demand of the people of Rajshahi to construct the embankment along the riverside of Padma to save Rajshah city. If the work of construction doesn't start before rainy season, people of Rajshahi will go for a greater movement, he mentioned.
Presided over by Doctor Abdul Mannan, Vice President of Rajshahi Raskha Sangram Parishad, the human chain programme was addressed, among others, by Jamaat Khan, General Secretary of RRSP, Dablew Sarker, General Secretary of Metropolitan unit of Awami League, Shahin Akter Rany, Social Worker, Moniruzzaman Moni, President of Rajshahl Chamber of Commerce and Industries,  Hasan Millat, President of Rajshahi Journalists' Union; Harunur Rashid, President ( In-charge) of Babosayee  Oikko Parishad; Debashis Pramanik Debu, Organising Secretary of RRSP, Monjur Hasan Mithu, Joint Secretary of RRSP, Entajul Haque Babu, Lawyer; Dr. Sujit Sarker, Professor of Rajshahi Universty, Kalpana Roy, General Secretary of Mohila Parishad, Rajshahi, Khaja Tarekh, Engineer, Shamsunnahar, Counsellor of Rajshahi City Corporation, , Ashraful Haque Tota, Vice Chairman of Paba upazila, Alauddin Al Azad, Leader of Rajshahi city Lokmorcha; Monira Rahman Mithi, Shahjahan Ali Borzahan, Faizullah Chowdhury, Jalal Uddin Ahmed, M. Sharif and Abdul Matin.
Jamaat Khan, General Secretary of Rajshahi Raskha Sangram Parishad said, during the rainy season of last year, Bulonpur, Gohomabona, Nabaganga, Harupur, Sonaikandi, Soshanghat, Khidirpur, Yusufpur, Godagari, Bagha, Charghat of Rajshahi region were devastated badly because of the erosion of Padma river. As  a result, thousand of people were rendered homeless. Various Governmental establishments, houses, trees and crop fields were eroded by the turbulent current of water.
If the initiative of implementation of the project of constructing embankment along the riverside of Padma is not taken soon, people will fall in a great danger.
He also said, government has released the fund for making embankments in the riverside areas of various places but no such fund has been released for making embankment along the river Padma in Rajshahi.
He said, though, the works of protection of riverside has already been started in Sirajganj, Bogra and other cities, no such initiative has so far been taken to save Rajshahi divisional headquarters.
