Construction of flood shelter begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 12: Construction work of a two-storied flood shelter has begun on Galakati High School premises under Fulchhari Upazila of the district today amid much enthusiasm among the locals.

The flood shelter is being constructed at the cost of Tk 8.7 million (Tk 87 lakh) under the direct supervision of the Directorate of Disaster Management, while the government of Bangladesh is providing the fund.

Deputy speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament and local lawmaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah formally inaugurated the construction work of the shelter through laying down the foundation stone Wednesday afternoon as the chief guest.

Speaking at the function Advocate Fazle Rabbi said after assuming in power in 2009 the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina implemented and is implementing different welfare activities for the people in the country.

As a part of the development works, the government is constructing the flood shelter for the people of the flood prone areas of the upazila so that they could take shelter during the natural disaster and pass their days and night safely, he said.

He also urged the people to help the government from their respective positions turn Bangladesh into middle income country by 2021 through materialising the dream of building digital Bangladesh.

Upazila chairman Habibur Rahman, UNO Mustafizur Rahman, upazila project implementation officer Babul Chandra Roy, upazila officials and political leaders and journalists were present on the occasion.

The locals in their instant reactions thanked the government for starting the construction work of the flood shelter in the area as their long cherished demand was getting fulfilled.

The construction work would be completed by June 2016, it was expected, said an official of the UNO office.

Later, the deputy speaker also inaugurated the 3-day long fruit bearing, wood and medicinal tree fair on the premises of the upazila parishad in the afternoon as the chief guest.
