Construction of sluice gate begins in Shaghata

GAIBANDHA, May 20 (BSS): Construction of a sluice gate on the embankment of the Alai River in Daldalia area under Shaghata upazila began on Monday amid much enthusiasm to the locals.
The objective of the work is to save Aman crops from the annual flash flood of the river and to remove sudden rain water from crop fields hurriedly through the gate as well, sources said. Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is constructing the sluice gate at a cost of Taka 71 lakh under its Small Water Resources Sector project funded by Asian Development Bank.
Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah inaugurated the work by unveiling a plaque and laying down a foundation stone.
Speaking on the occasion deputy speaker said after assuming to power in 2009 the government had implemented a series of welfare activities for the farmers to help them achieve their food security side by side with changing their lots economically, he added.
