SYLHET, Oct 07: A 10-storey building for the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court is being constructed for easing the long standing sufferings of litigants as well as the lawyers in Sunamganj district town.
The Public Works Department (PWD) is constructing the multi-storied building with modern facilities including lift and others at a cost of Tk 43.4 million.
A number of lawyers and official at the Chief Judicial Magistrate court, Sunamganj said only four courtrooms are there on the existing building where as 10 Judicial officers have to sit for.
This is why they have to sit on the courtrooms on shifts. Same courtroom is being used by more than a judge almost every day, causing much for all concerned.
Besides, some posts of judges had been lying vacant for long. As there are 102 staff members on the courts, some of them have to sit on the verandas verandah.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate has also been lying vacant for 6 months.
An official in the PWD said the work order was issued to the contracting firm, they started works on April 04, 2017 with a target to complete the job by June 2018.
But still it is incomplete due to contractor's negligence and for other reasons, the official said. It will take more time and we think it would n't be possible to complete things before June 2020.
There will be lifts, fire service, water reservoir and a power sub-station on the project, the official added.
The main court building would be on 20000 sq feet area. Internal roads would also be constructed on the project site.
The works couldn't be done in time mainly due to excess rain during the monsoon while land filling works are going on late, an official at the PWD said.
