Covid-19 cases on the rise in Chandpur

39 test positive at RU

The number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise rapidlyin Chandpur district while a total of thirty-nine students, teachers and employees of Rajshahi University (RU) tested positive for the disease on Wednesday.

Our Correspondent from Chandpur says, the Coronavirus situation is worsening in the district day by day as people are quite callous of following health guidelines in the haats, bazaars, shopping malls, tourist spots, launch ghats, railway stations, buses, launches, trains and public places.

As many as 87 people, including Chandpur Poura Mayor Jillur Rahman Jewel, have been infected with Covid-19 in last 24 hours till Thursday in Chandpur. This was disclosed by Civil Surgeon Dr Shahadat Hossain.

No mobile court is yet to be organised by the local administration in the busy and crowded places of the district town, let alone in the upazilas.

A total of 49 nurses in the Chandpur Nursing Institute are infected with Covid. Matlab Uttar Health Complex's Upazila Health & Family Planning officer Nusrat Jahan Mithen is also infected with Covid. The infected people are in home isolation and two are in Chandpur Sadar Hospital's isolation.

Head teacher Ismat Ara Shafi and six assistant teachers of Hasan Ali Govt Model Primary School in Chandpur town are infected with Covid. So, the students, their guardians and other assistant teachers are in panic with their children. It may be recalled that since March 2020, a total of 241 people have died of Covid-19 in the district. Of the dead, 98 in Chandpur Sadar.

Meanwhile, District Education Officer Md Giasuddin Patwary said, "About 90 per cent enrolled students of schools, colleges, technical schools and colleges, vocational institutes and madrasas in the district have been vaccinated. The rest are drop-outs and the heads of institutes are directed to vaccinate the drop-outs. It is hoped that the drop- out students will be vaccinated by January 31. There are 527 educational institutions in the district.

Still, about 57, 200 students are yet to take their 1st doses of vaccines. A total of 7,604 students have taken 2nd dose of vaccines.

UNB reports from RU, Dr. Tabibur Rahman, chief medical officer of RU medical center, informed that they collected samples of 68 teachers, students and employees of the university and sent them to the RT-PCR lab for testing.

Thirty nine of the samples of them were positive for Covid-19. "We have arranged to keep them in home quarantine so that other students do not become infected with the virus. Most of the university teachers, students and employees had symptoms of the virus," Dr Tabibur said.
