CHANDPUR, Aug 27: The boat traders and boat carpenters of Matlab Uttar and Matlab Dakhshin Upazilas of the district are awfully busy as the demand for country boats has increased due to incessant rainfall and sharp rise in water level in the Meghna and Dhonagoda rivers.

Most rural roads and crop fields in the two riverine Upazilas of the district have been inundated following the on-rush of flood waters from upper regions.

Shikirchar, Gozaria, Ekhlaspur, Borochar, Baherchar, Mohonpur, Shankibhanga, Char Umed, Doshani , Bordia, Aarong, Mobarakdi, Pingra and a few other areas along the Meghna and Padma rivers usually go under water during the rainy season.

At that time the people of the areas need country boat for smooth movement from one place to another for collecting fodder for domestic animals, transporting their produced paddy, wheat, potatoes, poultries vegetables and fruits to distant haats and bazars.

Many people from neighbouring Munshiganj district and Daudkandi Upazila come to buy boats here.

With the rise in water level recently, many people are seen busy buying boats in Chhotaki bazar. Boat makers Billal Hossain and his colleague Babu Mia said that they remain very busy making boats during the rainy season. They also said they can make a small boat by chambol wood in three to four days. A boat of 18 feet or 20 feet sells at Tk 5000 to 6000.

Dulal Prodhan has been doing boat business for the last thirty years. He along with other traders collects wood /logs from Barishal to make boats for sale. He said as boat is the only means of communication during the rainy days in the riverine areas, he sells at least 10/12 boats on weekly haat days.

It was observed that many boats were lying for days together for sale on both sides of Baburhat-Matlab- Dakshin Road.
