Creating awareness about flood preparedness stressed

GAIBANDHA, June 13 (BSS): Speakers at a cultural function here recently underlined the importance of creating awareness among the people about flood preparedness to reduce the loss of lives and properties during the calamity.
"In this context, cultural function can play a significant role and help the people of vulnerable areas to create awareness about flood preparedness for lowering the risk of natural calamity", they said.
They made the comments while addressing an inaugural session of a cultural function held at the Shaghata Pilot High School and College of Shaghata upazila.
With the financial assistance of Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme, a non-governmental organisation, and technical support of Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre (BDPC), Ansar and VDP office of Shaghata upazila organised the function under Flood Preparedness Programme (FPP).
Director of Ansar and VDP, Rangpur range Dulal Chandra Saha addressed the function as the chief guest and district commandant of Ansar and VDP M. Mahbubur Rahman was present as the special guest.
With upazila Ansar and VDP officer M. Shamsur Rahman Mondal in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by officer in charge of Shaghata thana M. Rafiqul Islam, area coordinator of FPP Shahidullah Kawsar and monitoring officer Ferdous Ahmed.
The guests said floods visit Gaibandha district every year creating untold sufferings to the victims as four major rivers -- Brahmaputra, Teesta, Karotoa and Ghagot flow through the district.
