Cropland in Sunamganj haor runs dry for withdrawal of water

SYLHET, Dec 28: Many croplands in Sunamganj district have become dry and is not ready for Boro paddy farming. A vast area on the Dekhar Haor has been dried up as influential fishermen groups withdrew water from the large waterbody for fishing weeks ago.
Farmers in good numbers in Sunamganj Sadar upazila alleged that the lessees of various haors withdrew water from the Dekhar Haor and others indiscriminately in November.
A farmer of the Lalpur area claimed that he had prepared land for cultivating Boro on 10 Bighas, but it is not possible due to water shortage.
The vast Dekhar Haor spreads Sunamganj Sadar, Biswambharpur, Doarabazar and Chhatak. Out of the total 10,000 hectares in Dekhar haor, about 9000 hectares are used for Boro paddy cultivation every year.
This year, 222,300 hectares in the district would be used for Boro farming.
Farmer Manir Uddin alleged that the lessees of waterbodies had withdrawn water a little earlier this year for fishing. We demand measures against them, he added.
