NILPHAMARI, Jan 25:  Cultivation of onion started in Nilphamari district. DAE sources said this year's target of onion cultivation in the district is in 1674 hectare of land to produce 13392 metric tonnes at an average production of eight metric tonnes per hectare.
Onion is cultivated in two different methods, one is through spreading seed and the other is planting seedlings. This season seedlings of onion are being planted in the land.
Farmers sources said the seedlings that were reared are now ready for plantation. Most of the farmers purchase seedlings from the markets as they themselves do not rear those.
When contacted one onion farmer Mahbubar Rahman said he prepared 30 decimal of land for onion cultivation and said that a minimum of two time irrigation is needed to help the plants grow.
