Cultivation of sweet pumpkin reducing poverty in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Apr 8: A bumper production of sweet pumpkin has been achieved in the shoal areas of Nilphamari district particularly in Dimla and Jaldhaka Upazila. The hardcore poor people living there have succeeded in doing so.
Cultivation of the vegetable in the sands of the shoals are said to have retained a particular taste and a bumper production of it created ecstasy among the farmers.
Sources said, some NGO's are providing technological support along with seed and loan to the farmers.
While contacted Abdur Rahman, a pumpkin farmer of Chatnai UP of Dimla Upazila said he cultivated pumpkin in one bigha (30 decimal) of land and he harvested 1000 pumpkin from there which he would sale at a minimum price of Tk 25000. His expenditure was not more than Tk 1000 as he himself worked in the field and did not employ any labour.
Pumpkin is also extensively cultivated in the homesteads of the poor people across the district.
