Cultivators make handsome profit from snake gourd farming


JOYPURHAT, Oct 14: Marginal peasants of Khetlal upazila of the district have been making handsome profit from cultivating snake gourd (Chichinga) amid favourable weather condition.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said farmers of the upazila have brought more lands under the vegetable cultivation this season due to its high demand.
In a recent visit this correspondent found farmer Azadul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Mosarraf Hossain, Fita Pramanik, Saju Maondal, Alim Uddin, Fazlul Haquer, Yasin Ali, Muslim Uddin, Abdul Momen, Mottalib Hossain, Mehedul Islam, Abdul Mamnur Rashid, Azizar Rahman, Amirul Islam, Bakka Hossain, Islam Hissain, Dulu Hossain, Abdus Sabur and Karim Hossain were rearing chichinga fields to get bumper production.
"I have cultivated chichinga on some 66 decimal of land spending Tk 50,000 to get a good profit this season and I have already made a profit of Tk 35,000, said farmer Nazrul Islam of Sagrampur village under Khetlal upazila. He also said, "I am expecting to make over Tk 1,20,000 from the remaining crops if the price remains fair till December."
Abul Kashem of Ataher village under Kalai upazila said he is purchasing the vegetable directly from chichinga field at Tk 1200 to Tk 1500 per maund.
Farmer Azizar Hossain of Alampur village under Khetlal upazila said he has brought around 0.45 acre of land under snake gourd cultivation this season and expecting to make around Tk 90,000, he added.
