Cumilla has good potential for cultivating HYV fruits

CUMILLA, Oct 22: Cumilla has a good potential for cultivating different fruits of high-yielding varieties. Recently, the agricultural research centre of Cumilla has developed various fruits of high-yielding varieties. Cultivating these fruits on the soil of this district will produce good results.
Sources at the agricultural research centre in Cumilla said the district was favoured in agriculture but was far behind in fruit cultivation. Farmers have long been convinced that the cultivation and production of high-yielding varieties of fruits will not be good in the soil of this district.
As a result, they refrained from cultivating high-yielding fruit in the courtyard or field of the home. But the agricultural research centre of Cumilla has changed the perception of farmers. Farmers are now gathering to collect the saplings of these fruits as they learn about their high-yielding varieties of fruit.
Officials of Cumilla Agricultural Research Center said there are different types of soil in Cumilla district. Somewhere hilly and some places are flat. In these places different types of crops were cultivated but fruits were not. Cumilla Agricultural Research Center has developed several fruit varieties for cultivating weather and soil-based fruits.
Various high-yielding fruit saplings are being produced, including mango, malta, coconut, litchi, banana and dragon fruit. After that, the saplings are distributed among the farmers. Every day, farmers are gathering crowds to get these saplings. In the meantime, farmers also understand the issues of saplings and soil utilisation.
Sifata Rabbana Khanam, a researcher at the Cumilla Agricultural Research Centre, said a long study has been carried out on whether the cultivation of high-yielding varieties fruits will be good in Cumilla. "We have studied the type of soil and achieved a good result", she added.
Chief Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Agricultural Research Center, Cumilla, Dr Obaidullah Kayesar, said they have developed several varieties that will give good yield.
He expected the hope of massive fruit cultivation in the district in the future.
