Demand for frozen shrimps produced in Khulna rises in Netherlands

KHULNA, Sept 25: The demand of frozen foods (shrimp) produced in Khulna area has been increased in Netherlands. Fifty per cent of the total export of frozen shrimps from this area has been exported to Netherlands. Belgium was in the top list in exporting last season.

Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) sources said that frozen foods worth 39 million USD exported to 15 countries from Khulna area in August-2014. Of them frozen foods worth $14.27 million exported to Netherlands.  At the same time shrimps worth $8.36 million in Belgium and $7.9 million in Germany were exported and other importing countries are Spain, USA, Italy, Denmark, Greece, Japan, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Cyprus, Portugal and Poland.  

Assistant Director of EPB Khulna Shafiqul Islam said that the exporters are interested to export frozen food in Netherlands as the price of the foods is high there. He also said that facilities are given on behalf of government to promote the exporters.

The managing director of Rupali Sea Food Kamrul Alam said that the shrimp of this area is the high demand in Netherlands. Many other buyers were also visited the shrimp processing units of this area.   

District Fisheries Department said that a total of 21,617 shrimp enclosures on 35,301 hectares of land for Bagda and 18,170 plots on 43,851 hectares of land for Galda have been established in this season of the district.
