GAIBANDHA, May 16: Huge development and beautification works are being done to turn the dead Ghagot river into a modern Ghagot Lake aimed at building an attractive district town.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is implementing the schemes at the cost of Tk 150 million while the government of Bangladesh is providing the fund, office sources said.
Under the schemes, 3-km long of the river is being re-excavated and 6 km long slope protection is being done, said Senior Assistant Engineer Ahsan Kabir.
Apart from it, two girder bridges over the river at David Companypara and Shashanghat areas, four attractive ghats and 8 benches for the visitors are being constructed under the schemes, he also said.
Executive engineer of LGED M. Abdur Rahim Shaikh said the development works are going on in full swing.
In reply to a query executive engineer said average 35 per cent works had already been completed and the rest works would be finished by June, 2019, it is expected.
It may be mentioned here that the speedway of the Ghagot river was diverted through loop cutting at David Companypara area of the town in 2002 resulting 4 km-river which was blowing through the middle of the town turned into a dead one, sources said.
