CHUADANGA, Aug 4 (UNB): Diarrhoea has broken out alarmingly in the district as several hundred people infected with the water-borne disease have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital over the last few days.
Sources at Sadar Hospital said 340 patients suffering from diarrhoea toke admission there till 12.00 pm on Sunday.
Most of the patients were coming from Baganpara, Masjidpara, Majherpara, Jintolapara, Islampara and other areas of Chuadanga town.
Doctors cited consumption of contaminated water supplied by the Chuadanga municipality authorities as the main reason behind the sudden outbreak of the disease.
Lying on the hospital bed, Nurul Haque, a resident of Islampara area under the municipality, told this correspondent on Sunday noon that being attacked with diarrhoea, he had been receiving treatment at the hospital for the last two days.
However, his condition was yet to become stable.
Like Nurul Haque, many patients said they got affected by diarrhoea after drinking contaminated water supplied by the municipality authorities.
Safura Begum of Jintola area of the town said the situation has arisen as water reservoir of the municipality has remained unclean for long.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the 100-bed hospital Dr Masud Rana said they are now struggling to deal with the record number of diarrhoea patients, adding that the situation has reached such a level that the hospital is overcrowded with the patients suffering from the waterborne disease.
The hospital did not experience such influx of patients down with diarrhoea earlier, he said.
According to doctors, dirrhoea outbreak has taken place alarmingly in the country twice every year during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon period.
Head of Sadar Hospital Dr Paritosh Chakraborty said they are trying their best to contain the diarrhoea outbreak and added that doctors and nurses from three upazilas of the district have been brought in to cope with the staggering number of dirrhoea patients.
Meanwhile, holidays of all officers and staff of the health department in the district have been canceled to ensure that people suffering from diarrhoea are provided with proper healthcare facilities.
At present, people in diarrhoea affected areas have stopped taking supply water.
Against such backdrop, mayor of the municipality Riazul Islam asked people not to get worried and said they have collected water samples of diarrhoea affected areas for laboratory test.
The mayor said they are distributing oral saline and water purifying tablets to control diarrhoea outbreak, adding that campaigns are also being carried out urging people to drink water after boiling.
